Guitairist Filippo Dall’Asta leads a Django Reinhardt inspired team of Kep Martinez/cl, Yeray Herrera/g, Agustin Buenavente/ and Fernando Angulo/dr through a mix of gypsy’d standards and originals. He gives a lot of room to the warm clarinet of Martinez, who blows a warm breeze on “After You’ve Gone” and does some nice tricky unison lines with the leader on “Mona Lee”. The band knows how to have fun, singing along for a creative read of “Cherokee” and whistling through a festive take of Bobby Vinton’s “Lonely”. Dall’Asta himself has a nice touch on the strings, dancing on his own ‘Not Yet, Sofie” and folksy for “ Elena” while heading to the caravan on “The Man I Love”. Some extra strings make for a dreamy take of “ Blue Skies”, but it’s the core band I want to see when the ever come to So Cal.
