Playing vibes, marimba and electronics, Patricia Brennan leads a forward looking team of Jon Irabagon/as-ss, Mark Shim/ts, Adam O’Farrill/tp-el, Marcus Gilmore/dr, Mauricio Herrera/perc and Kim Bass/b through a series of complex originals. The mix of vibes and percussion makes for bright tones, rocking on the exciting pieces such as “Los Otros Yo”, with Shim’s tenor puffing on the forward drive of “Breaking Stretch”. The electronics make for dark brooding o n”555” with Irabagon’s soprano winding around Bass for “Palo de Oross”. Moods are suspenseful and sustained around Brennan’s marimba for “Mudanza” with some heavy traffic creating street scenes on “Five Suns”. The thick mix of sounds never gets claustrophobic, with the soloists breaking out of the pack at various stages. A photo finish.
