Pianist Aaron Parks teams with Greg Touhey/g, David Ginyard/b and Jongkuk Kim/dr on this Don Was-produced album that has a modern indie/Nashville feel. There’s a folksy plaintive feel to “Ashe’” and some Cumberland gap is thrown in on the dark “Willamina”, with pop hints on the upbeat “Delusions”. Touhey gallops with the leader on “Flyways” and rocks on the rockish Caribbean pulse of “Sports”. The drums keep busy, creating a rich tension between the laid back leader on the backbeat of “The Machines Say No” while the team probes through the blue shadows of “Locked Down”. Smokey Mountain sounds.
