Needless to say, this TV special of Charles Schultz’s Peanuts cartoon characters is not one of his most famous or popular, nor is it the soundtrack to Kamala Harris’ Presidential campaign. However, the music, recorded in 1972 with pianist/composer Vince Guaraldi and his rotating team of Seward McCan/b-fl, Tom Harrell/tp, Glenn Cronkhie/dr, Mel Martin/wwinds and Pat O’Hara/tb is quite impressive. There are a couple tunes associated with other shows, such as “Oh, Good Grief” and “Linus and Lucy” but the versions here have an impressive vibe. Guaraldi also plays electric piano, guitar and even brings in some vocals with the takes of “Linus and Lucy/Poor Charlie Brown” having a Stevie Wonder feel, and “Joe Cool” as bohemian as you can get. The team bops till they drop on “Cookin’ Snoopy” and “Blue Charlie Brown” with “Incumbent Walt” getting a number of various versions fit for the ears. This one’s got my vote!
