Three masters of today’s generation join with one from a previous, as AL Foster supplies the punch for leader Peter Bernstein/g along with Brad Mehldau/p and Vicente Archer/b. Bernstein displays his straight, no chaser tone on gorgeous arias of “Lament” and a rainbow’d “Born To Be Blue”. The overall mood is casual and relaxed with Bernstein and Mehldau in reflective form over Foster’s paint brush strokes on “You Go To My Head” while the drummer percolates under Mehldau on the moderately paced “ Ditty For Dewey”. “Hazel Eyes” and “No Problem” feel like putty being molded into a shape in the hands of these gents, while “Perpetual Pendulum” takes you to the third set of a half empty club at 11:30 at night. Nothing to prove but style.
