It sounds like bassist Ross McHenry has taken on the baton from the legendary Jaco Pastorius, as this album with Eric Harland/dr, Donny McCaslin/ts, Adam O’Farrill/tp, Ben Monder/g and Matthew Sheens/p is filled with a mix of experimentation, passion and propulsion. McHenry leads the charge around Harland’s happy high hat on the galloping “Waves” while he gets as dramatic as an Italian opera on ”In Landscapes’. Ambient tones with Monder and synthy ideas create a frame for McCaslin on “July 1986” with the saxist shrieks and shouts around the foamy plod on “1989” Complex and tricky ideas get declaratory for O’Farrill on “ North of the River” and the horns yearn as they slowly build up on the sprinting to a climax “Odysseus In Brooklyn”. When’s he coming to LA?
