Maybe this album should have been titled Alone and Together, as saxist Eric Alexander and pianist Mike Ledonne spend a good part of the album performing solo pieces as well. Together, the large tone saxist and bop inspired pianist work on mostly originals, such as a bold and beautiful “Mabes” with the two conversing, while Ledonne gives a long intro before passing the baton to a laconic Alexander on his own “Mutation”. A glorious aria on “Two in One” displays Alexander’s tenor, while a sweet soprano glistens on “Autumn In New York”. On his own, Ledonne chimes on a reflective “Lost But Not Forgotten” and his elegiac on “Mary” has him stretching out on a comfortable recliner. Well broken in slippers.
