The exciting catalogue of recorded concerts at LA’s Sam First Bar continues with this rollicking set by alto saxist Devin Daniels and he steam of Julie Knowles/tp, Chris Fishman/p, Jermain Paul/b and Benjamin Ring/dr n a collection of standards and originals. Dancer’s tone is bright and bold, a la Jackie McLean, as his solo intro to the title tune indicates before the rest of the team jumps into the Formula One race. Ring hits hard on the intro for some bold work by Knowles on a kinetic read of John Coltrane’s “Spiral” with his stick boogalooing alongside Paul on the upbeat “Enjoy”. Fishman gives a glorious intro to the rumbling “Him” and the team shows some bop chops on a bright “Scrapple From The Apple” with the horns introducing the piece with frisky freshness, with some deft brush and bass work gliding through a pretty read of “Ugly Beauty”. Muscular musicality.
