Playing keyboards and piano, Kavyesh Kaviraj creates a wide range of textures and moods with his team of Jeff Bailey/eb, Kevin Washington/dr, Pete Wh itman/ts-ss and Omar Abdulkaim/tp. On piano in trio form, his touch is graceful as he gallops on “Rain” and with horns the band is dramatic as on the Afro Cuban romp of “Who Am I” with Whitman’s tenor declaratory on the enthusiastic “Smoke of the Midnight Lamp”. The team gets a bit soulful with Kaviraj switching to keyboards and Whitman diggin in with Abdulkarim on the peppy Saudade”. Most alluring is when some extra harmonics are brought in by vocalists Aby Wolff and MMYYKK during a tender and fluffy “Beloved” or graceful “Lullaby” respectively, with fragrant strings and the exotic bansuri adding colors of wonder. Well mixed colors on the musical palate.
