Charles Evans: Subliminal Leaps

Baritone saxist Charles Evans fronts a floating team with the unorthodox combination of David Liebman/ss, Ron Stabinsky/p and Tony Marino/b for a collection of free floating and, well, FREE compositions. Without a drummer, the artists are trying to create more of a chamber feel; both Evans, with his big tone (as he demonstrates on the title track) and Liebman have more than enough to share. The songs range from dark, elliptical and spacious pieces like “Dreamed Out March” which has the soloists weaving in and out of each other, to a piece such as “Mahler Method” a composition which has the horns melding together to form an almost string section of a sound similar to the famous classical composer. As expected, lots of search solos with tonal leaps and scales that sound almost like a workout from a Deville or Klose Method book. The title tune has some clippety clopped sounds that is reminiscent of scurrying cockroaches, whereas “Interruptions” mixes pizzicato sounds from bass and piano strings. An interesting foray, but will you listen to it 5 times in a row?
