Daniel Janke Winter Trio: Available Light

Canadian pianist and composer Daniel Janke forms a thoughtful trio with Basile Rahola/b and Ariel Tessler/dr on a mix of richly textured originals and spirituals. The threesome have an alluring way of sustaining tension in a piece, with Janke’s delicate crystalline touch assuaged by Tessler’s brushes on the title piece, or the sustained tug of “River Ice”. Rahola and Tessler get earthy together on a modal “Giant” and skate melodically with brushes and touches for “ Eleanor’s Waltz”. Most creative is a read of they hymn “Blessed Assurance” that begins with a soft candle flicker and builds up to a glorious full  light, while a mix of fugue and boogie is deeply pulsed on “Man of Constant Sorrow”. Janke testifies in reverence on the closing “Gospel For Betty”, while showing elegance on warm wind chime of “Song For Margaret”. Thoughtful themes.
