Bassist Sam Anning brings his compositions to fruition with a team of Mat Jodrell/tp, Carl Mackey/as, Julien Wilson/ts-el, Andrea Keller/p-key, Theo Carbo/b and Kyrie Anderson for tunes dedicated to Archie Roach. The colors are soft and pastoral, with the horns elegiac for “Rise Up” and warm for the ballad “Kicking Kicking Not Screaming” featuring the graceful sax of Wilson. Wilson is somber for “Hard Light” and pleads with a yearning Jodrell on “Uvalde”. Folksy sounds from Carbo on “Eleventy Million” and dark hues form on “Strangers” to create an album that feels like a walk through an art gallery.
