Chris Potter forms a “supergroup” with Wayne Shorter alumni John Patitucci/b and Brian Blade/dr along with Brad Mehldau/p for a meeting of the genius minds. The summit has Potter on all three of his reeds, a lyrical and graceful bass clarinet glows alongside Mehldau on “Indigo Iididko” and his soprano sax floats over Blade’s brushes on the pretty “Aria”. On tenor, Potter gives a warm solo intro to the deeply pulsed “Horizon Dance” and cries out over Mehldau’s nocturne for “Other plans”. Patitucci is Mozartian for his intro to the reflective “Eagles Point” and picks his way around Blade’s cymbals on “Cloud Message”. No fires or sparks, but lots of warm embers.
