This double album by clarinetist and tenor saxist Jacob Shulman has him in the company of Hayoung Lyou/p, Walter Stinson/b and Kayvon Gordon/dr with guest Jasper Dutz/cl for six tunes on High Firmament. “Plucky has a folksy feel, and Gordon bops well on “Hometown Hero” with a laconic processional for “Toroid”. The tunes get a bit jagged and cluttered, but always move forward.
The teams stays together for the second album, with some fun Mingusy swaying on the rich “Short Way Around The Hill” and a warm sax on the avalanche of “Hot Rain Dance”. There are some pretty moments on “Moments Away” and a bit of a traffic jam during “Hole In One”. A good traffic cop could have cured a lot of the problems.
