Bill Frisell: Orchestras

Always known for his guitar textures and tones, Bill Frisell searches out new lands on this album that has his team of bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Rudy Royston supported by either the 11 member Umbria Jazz Orchestra or the more lush 60 piece Brussels Philharmonic, directed by Manuele Morbidini and Alexander Hanson, respectively.

The result is a collection of nourish moods akin to Bernard Herrman, with rich reeds surrounding Frisell on “Nocturne Vulgaire” or the dreamy “Doom”. The oboes are a thoughtful feature on “Throughout” and “Sweet Rain”, with lots of shadows during the fragrant “Richter 858.” Frisell uses a thin paintbrush, sounding folksy on “Levees” and rural with Royston for “Rag”. When’s the film coming out?
