In what was supposed to be their “final” tour, the 1982 version of the Who leaders Roger Daltrey and Pete Townsend still had bassist John Entwistle, and while drummer Kenney Jones was no Keith Moon (and who was?), who does capture the mood and attitude, along with veteran pianist/keyboardist Tim Gorman. What sets this concert apart is that the band was fresh off of a new album, It’s Hard, so the show has the band on a one-off performing many of the tunes from that release, such as the title tune, “Cry If You Want” and “Dangerous” as well as Entwistle’s “The Quiet One” from their previous album.
The band is in an inspired mood, even on the trendy “Sister Disco”, with Daltrey and Townsend acting like they have something to prove on “Eminence Front” and reaching all the way back to “I Can’t Explain”. Most fun of all is towards the end, with the band going retro as they rock out on The Beatles’ “I Saw Her Standing There”, Eddie Cochran’s “Summertime Blues” and the Isley’s “Twist and Shout”. Hey, they really were mods, after all!
