Bassist Hakon Skogstad teams up with Andres Rokseth and Asbjorg Ryeng on the bandson, vio0linists Sveinung Lillegjerka and Anders Larse, violaist Bergmund Skaslien, cellist Marit Aspaas and bassist Ole Herman Sjolin for a collection of modern tango pieces. The complex music ranges from rich and accessible romantic ideas like “Romance Para Ocho” to Bartokian strings as on “Tano Contra Tago” and the dark slashing “The Anvil”. The pizzicato’d “Battaglia” is the most jazzy of the ideas with the bandoneons battling it out on the energetic ‘A Contemplative Rhapsody”. No time for Gardel here.
