FOLKSY IDEAS…Adrian Sutherland: Precious Diamonds, Neal Rosner: Kentucky

Old folks at home…

Singing, playing acoustic guitar and keyboards, Adrian Sutherland tells rootsy stories on this album with Colin Linden/g, Janice Powers/B3, John Dymond/b, Gary Craig-Jerry Roe/dr, Jeff Taylor/acc, Jim Hoke/sax, MickeyRaphael harm and Brandon Robert Young/voc. There are hints of genres ranging from C&W on the richly harmonized “The Storm” to the soulful R&B of “Notawe (Father)”. Sutherland if folksy on the troubadour’d “Boogeyman” and gives minstrel moods for “Diamonds”. Unassuming themes in jeans.

Playing keyboards, synth and singing, Neal Rosner joins with percussionist Steve Baker and some cameo guests for a collection of harrowing moods and messages. There’s a Delaney and Bonnie feel with guitarist Alonzo Pennington on the gripping “Red and Blue” with some dramatic biblical messages hammered out on “Micajah”. Rosner can spin a yarn as on “The Choice” and is artsy on the synthy “Apocalypse” and bohemian “Le Cirque Des Enfants” , while going baroque on “I Guess”. Street corner preaching.
