Pianist Geoffrey Dean brings together a strong and swinging post bop team of Justin Copeland/tp, Harish Raghaven/b and Eric Binder/dr for some updated versions of classic jazz tunes. Copeland took his Kenny Dorham pills for this outing, gliding on “Cyclic Episode” and nimble as he bops around “Blue Minor”. Dean is elegant on the ivories throughout, working well on “My Conception” and bouncing like Bud Powell on “Yodaa Yokada”, with Raghaven bowing deeply on a rubato’d take of “Nardis”. Binder’s sticks charge on the bright “Jet Stream” and his cymbals gallop through a lithe “ESP”. Modern vintage.
