Rodriguez: Searching For Sugar Man

Most of us have never heard of the South African singer/songwriter Rodriguez, who made a bit of a name for himself during the 70s with some gritty and open nerved songs. Sort of like a south of the Equator Bob Dylan. A documentary was recently made which won a ton of awards at Sundance and other artsy festivals, with this disc being the soundtrack; basically, it’s a collection of his most poignant songs. The tunes themselves are a mix of aggression, blasphemy, toxic relationships, nihilism, meaninglessness and foul language. Hey, play it on your first date, and see what happens! In all honesty, it’s decadent and pointless material like this that made me try music without lyrics, henceforth my love affair that I’m still having with jazz.
