Marcel Bonfim: Farewell/Despedida

Brazilian born but Chicago rooted bassist Marcel Bonfim brilliantly mixes both worlds on this collection of originals and flavored covers. His team of Jonathan Wenzel/dr-perc, Casey Dahl/p-key and  Gerald Martinez/ts-ss-as is sweet and fresh with Wenzel’s brushes waltzing under Martinez’s also on the delightful “Going Home” and digs in with assertiveness on the muscular “Sister (Irma)”. Ana Catharina Oliveira brings in a dreamy voice on the mix of traditional folk forms and modal pulses with Martinez’s searing tenor sax on the title tune, and is festive around his soprano on the celebrative “Bermbau”. Bonfim himself serves as a perfect traffic cop, producing a rich solo intro to “Sister (Irma)” here, a solo aria there as on “By Myself” and creating a jogger’s pulse for the lyrical and optimistic “Alvorada”. South American flavors with Midwestern core values of  hospitality.
