****RINGER OF THE WEEK****THE GREAT DAVIDIC SONGBOOK..Peter Jonatan and Metrople Orkset: Psalms Symphony

Why write your own lyrics when you can quote God?

That is the conclusion that inspired composer Peter Jonatan as he found (literally) inspiration from the various Psalms from the Bible. Mixing a jazz trio of Jasper Soffers/p, Aram Kersbergen/b and Martijn Vink/dr with the Meteropole Orkest conducted by Jukka Iisakkila, Jonatan uses three movements of music inspired by Psalms 29,, 136, 121 and 96 with sweeping ideas and passionate singing by the Goot Omroepkoor choir conducted by Benjamin Goodson. “God The Magnificent King” includes segues of rich  piano and fervent strings, with the trio giving a dancing intro to the Tchaikovsky-inspired “God, The Merciful”. The dreamy brass and swinging trio volley back and forth on “God the Protector” with the choir supported by exciting drums and brass on the “God The Savior and Holy Judge”, reminiscent of Duke Ellington’s Sacred Concerts. Do I dare say the music is “inspired”?
