THE GATEWAY TO OILDALE…Wynn Stewart: The Bakersfield Pioneer

In this day of synthesized country music, where the artists are essentially rockers with a cowboy hat and a twang, its easy to appreciate a guy like Wynn Stewart (1934-85), who along with Buck Owens, essentially created what became known as the “Bakersfield Sound” which was essentially a harder rocking and plugged in pureeing of Nashville Country and Western. This two disc, 38 song anthology puts together  songs  from his albums alongside a bunch of his hit singles, including “Waltz Of The Angels”, ‘Big, Big Love” Anther Day, Another Dollar” as well as his top ten tune “Wishful Thinking” . He was also known for his association with vocalist Jan Howard, and a handful of those songs, such as “How The Other Half Lives” and “We’ll N ever Love Again” are included as well. Stewart definitely had a knack for swinging (and living) hard, and tunes like “I Done Done It” and “Playboy” put just about everything released by today’s posers to shame.
