The early days of “Hotcha” jazz are delivered by the trio of Dan Levinson/cl-ts, Mark Shane/p and Kevin Dorn/dr on this fun revisitation of songs from The Depression. Levinson is a knockout here, with his tenor sounding like it has imbibed the waters of Chu Berry or Herschel Evans, big, beefy and growling on the two stepping “Keep A Song In Your Soul” and blowing out smoke rings on the breathy “The Day You Came Along”. His clarinet has a dash of Goodman and a dot of Edmund Hall, liking mid to lower range on the boogie’d “El Rado Scuffle” and bluesy for ”Delta Bound”. Shane strides right on the intro to “Roses In December” and is as romantic as a box of chocolates on “Sweetheart O’ Mine”. These gents remind you why jazz became the country’s most popular music at one point, instead of being currently relegated to being considered museum pieces. Check it out!
