Trombonist JC Sanford puts together a drummerless band of pianist Michael Cain and bass man Anthony Cox to create some fluid and floating originals and covers. The threesome create some fun moods, with tropical sounds on “Sparrows are Badasses” teaming well with Sanford’s brash animal calls, with Cox keeping everything tied together in a bundle. Piano and bass created askance reflections around the leader’s warm tones during “Avocado”, and the team goes bopping to a hip bounce for “Choro de Familiaris” . The there is some tight stop and starting that grabs your ears on “Fellowfellowflow” and the three reflect like a stained glass window on “Some Moments are Eternal”. Sanford’s treatment of jazz standards has him In bel canto form with Cain in a romantic mood for Wayne Shorter’s “Toy Tune” and Sanford sighs and coos on a particularly relaxed read of Thelonious Monk’s “Evidence”. Well placed paces in space.
