Vocalist and compose Laura Chu Wiens, aka “Aurallaura”, puts together a creative musical curry of sounds on this album filled with a core of Greg Lutz on a wide variety of instruments as well as Nick Costa/dr, Billy Sokol-John Dahlman/b, Ryan Salisbury-Ellen Perkins and Nashwan Abdullah-Gracie Zielinski-Alex Price-Ben Townsend/strings.
But the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, with Wiens having a tone similar to Helen Reddy, but sprinkling it in various flavors. She’s in an artsy/bohemian mood with Lutz’ clarinet and piano on “Press The Word” while R&B textured teamed beside his electric guitar and tenor sax on “City Sister”. A dash of gypsy soul flows through her veins with the violins on the traditional Balkan song “Zapjevala Sojka Ptica’ with a impressionistic pastoral atmosphere hovers o “City Sister, Homestead Heart”. This lady has a lot of ideas, and they all work well; she makes you believe in what she believes in
