Drummer and composer Marlon Simon leads a richly textured team of Edward Simon/p, Michael Simon/tp, Alex Norris/tp, Peter Brainin/sax, Boris Kozlov/b, Roberto Quintero/perc, Monica Ellis/bassoon and Kevin Newton/Frh through some fragrant originals. What sets this album apart from other Latin gems is the inclusion of the French horn and bassoon, creating subtle textures as on the moody and dark “Searchin” and palpably thick “August 17th”. The horns sensuously saunter on “Un Canto Llanero” while some staccato piano mixes with the timbales on the upbeat “Pa”. Brainin’s soprano sax goes gentle with Norris’ longing trumpet during “Missing Them” and the trumpeter is nimble through the tricky charts of “Walkin’”. A warm breeze.
