Peter Rosendal: Vejviser

Sounds of nature and man’s creation are melded together by Peter Rosendal , playing and improvising on a pair of  pianos, teamed with Palle Mikkelborg/tp, Cecilie Strange/ts, Craig Earle/b and Nancy Harms/voc. The nine pieces are reminiscent of the “New Age” albums from Windham Hill  a score of years before, but with background sounds of animals and God’s creation serving as backdrops.

The melodies of “Almindso” and “Klokkefrostien” are simple and plaintive, but Strange’s voice on the former adds a pastoral quality to the atmosphere, while Mikkelborg’s fluffy horn brings a floating haze. Tensile  piano strings create a gentle rhythmic flow to “Kongeegen”, and Rosenal’s dark touch adds depth to the forest of sounds on “Tornsangerland”. There’s a genteel simplicity to “Oldenborre” and “Ides Triangel” that is cleverly juxtaposed by the effects, thereby creating a tension of its own. A gingerly walk in the reserve.
