Drew Zaremba: Reunion

Playing sax and organ, composer/arranger Drew Zaremba puts together a muscular big band on this John Clayton-produced album that mixes originals with some wild reads of covers. Of the later, Zaremba lets guitarist Steve Kovalcheck  dig in for a roller coaster ride of Pink Floyd’s “Money” while Dana Landry’s piano veers around the sax section on Haydn’s “Surprise” Symphony. Tenor saxist Austin Cebulske leads the boogalooing version of Scott Joplin’s ragtime classic “The Entertainer” and leads a lounge lizard version of Chopin’s “Minute Waltz” Trumpeter Wayne Bergeron gets the spotlight. For the originals. The band sounds a bit like the Doobie Brothers on “We Got “Dis” and the reeds get pretty with the piano on “Together”. Lots of ideas to keep the listener on one’s toes.
