Since Clifford Brown recorded his album with strings back in the 1950s, the allure of trumpet and orchestra has been the goal of every trumpet player. Antoine Drye meets that challenge with this gorgeous release that has orchestrator Isaac Raz melding horns and strings as well as some rich vocals on a mix of originals and jazz covers. Most cozy is a collection of voices as dad, baby girl and an usher playing roles in “Pretty” and some Sarah Vaughish vocals teamed with John Ellis’ clarinet on ”Image”. The woodwinds float around Drye for “Send In The Clowns” and a dreamy “Laura” while “Goodbye” is a noir alley of ideas. Drye gets soulful on “When It’s Sleepy Time Down South” with Thelonious Monk’s “Reflections” harrowing in its long shadows. Creative and contemplative.
