THE RED CORPUSCLES OF JAZZ VOCALS…Ella Fitzgerald: Best of the BBC Vaults

Here’s a singer that reminds you why you fell in love with jazz in the first place. This cd/dvd combo is comprised of various concerts by The First Lady of Song, ranging from 1965 performances  at “Show of the Week,” a ’74 concert at Ronnie Scotts, and a ’77 gig at the Montreux Jazz Festival. The supporting teams range from trios to full swinging orchestras, and all throughout Ella is in celebratory form. A roaring take of “Just A-Sitting and A-Rockin’” as well as a raucous “St. Louis Blues” show this lady as the life of the party,  while more somber pieces like “Angel Eyes” and “Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye” are crystal clear in tone and penetration. Some of the pieces are better recorded than others, with a dash of a distance in Fitzgerald’s voice, but once you get over that, you’re in for the time of your life. This lady makes coffee get tired!
