Pianist Dan Crisci creates stained glass windows on this collection of original pieces. Each 3-5 minute piece is a “jazz meditation” in that they are all contemplative with room for intuitive improvisation. “Respite”, for instance , includes reflective twilight shadows, while contemplative ruminations hover on “Floating Away” and the stately “One Last Midnight”. There’s a bit of a Broadway feel to the sonata’d “Impressions of Sondheim”’ and a warm parlor glow to “In A Sense”. A dash of Ellingtonia mixed with Satie is felt on the personal ballad “Waiting In The Wings”, and a stretching out of the left hand on the soft “Distant Thoughts” evokes blendings ranging from George Winston to Claude Debussy. The music is meditative, in that it is not rushed, and jazzy in that it is creative. Tranquil, lyrical and reflective rhythmic ripples.
