Pianist and composer Angelica Sanchez puts together a team of Michael Attias/sax, Ben Goldberg/cl, John Hebert/b, Thomas Heberer/tp, Sam Ospovat/dr, Chris Speed/ts, Omar Tamez/g and Kenny Warren/tp for a mix of originals and a couple covers. The sound and approach feels like a loose fitting Mingus conglomeration, with thick horns veering in many directions as on “Nighttime Creatures or the gurgling Ringleader”. Speed’s tenor is soft on a dream “Cloud House” while trumpets gasp on an emphesymic “Tristeza”. Sanchez is a beauty for a rich read of Ellington’s “Lady of the Lavender Mist” and is askance around the hovering horns of “Astra Light of Alarid”. The solos run the gamut from sensitive and soft to fractured and fragmented, with the tunes sometimes hanging together by a piano string. Intuitive intonations.
