Elmar Frey: Seven Colors

Drummer Elmar Frey shows his allegiances on this album, with a song title like “Silverish” relating to the hard bop master Horace Silver. He brings in a team of Daniel Schenker/tp-fh, Rodrigo Botter Mio/as-fl, Christoph Grab/ts-ss-fl, Stefan Schlegel/tb, Alessandro d’Episcop/p and German Klaiber/dr for a tentet of muscular originals. Frey drives the horns hard on”Blue Course Ready” while his brushes dance  on the sleek “Raffaela’s Waltz” for interplay between piano and bass. D’Eiscopo strides well on “Here Comes Livio” and the flutes float on “Shadow Play” and Clarity”. Crisper than snow peas.
