If Philly Joe Jones didn’t invent hard bop drumming, he certainly pioneered it, being on countless Club in 1962. He’s with two different groups, both with Elmo Hope/p and Larry Ridley/b but different front lines. Dizzy Reece/tp, Sonny Red/as and John Gilmore/ts tear through “”Joes Delight” with Red in Parker’s mood around Jones’ high hat on “Take Twelve”. Bill Hardman/tp and Roland Alexander/ts are toting through the roof on “Well You Needn’t” and Jones gives a solo that shakes the rafters on “Shaw ‘Nuff” leading the chaotic avalanche of “Muse Rapture” with beats, off beats and near beats the will make your head spin. It’s hammer time!
