Dan Weiss: Jhaptal Drumset Solo

The title is a bit of a misnomer, as on first glance, you’re probably going to think that this release by drummer Dan Weiss is simply one guy “going for it.” Instead, Weiss teams up with guitarist Miles Okazaki and puts together a 36 piece suite that combines drones, staccato voicings, and conversant drumming throughout this one of a kind release. Okazaki delivers these repetitive motifs, over and over in a hypnotic fashion, while Weiss then either produces conversant returns or fiery and intense declarations with his drums. A great part of the time, Weiss delivers voicings that can only be described as Asian versions of American scat (or is it the other way around?). Sometimes these tongue and throat twisting utterances make up a predominance of the percussion, causing a three way traffic jam with the drums and guitars. Fascinating, yet it seems like it might be better suited as music for a National Geographic special.
