The successful idea of Jim Self/s tuba and John Chiodini’s guitar gets a repeat performance on this encore album along with trumpeter Ron Stout, Kendall Kay on drums and bassist Ken Wild. The whole trick is in the arranging, and the charts work well, ranging from a duet between the two leaders on “Susanne” to the moody feel of “Whisper N ot”. Stout is rich on a boppin waltz of “Ornathardy”, with Wild giving a samba feel to JJ Johnson’s “Lament”. The team swings out on “Touch and Go” and is cozy for a quirky take of “Ain’t Misbehavin’”. The team is nimble as all get out on “Dig”, with Chiodini as crisp as snow peas. Why does this work so well?!?
