Bassist and composer Alex Fournier brings together Bea Labikova/wwinds, Naoi McCarroll-Butler/bcl-cl, Tom Fleming/g, Michael Davidson/vib and Stefan Hegerat/dr for a mix of originals that contrast between meow ambience and intuitive free form explorations. Of the former, “Prelude” and “Fires of the Icy Desert Plateau” float with hovering long tones and delicate vibes, and McCarroll-Butler’s clarinet is a rich sonata for “Atop The Onyx Tower”. “Basalt Pillars…” starts out as such, ending in some cacophonous alto shrieking, and “What Cycle or Identity” plods along with askance harmonies, with some cymbals coaxing along the spacey “The Dance that Wrought…” Mellow and mayhem.
