The team of Sharel Cassity/as-fl, Mitchell Shiner/vib, Johannes Wallmann/p, John Christensen/b and Devin Drobka/dr get together for some sleek original post boppers. Cassity’s flute is impressionistic, floating on the pastel’d “Tone Poem”; besides that, her alto sax is warm throughout, with a soulful vibrato over Drobka’s backbeat on Nice Day”. Christensen and Drobka rumble in the jungle on “Non-Non” and groove a deep pulse for Wallman on “Same River, Once”. Shiner’s vibes are a real plus here, jabbing with Cassity on the cascading “Whistle In the Wind” and nimble together on the serpentine “ Journeyer”. Lots of sparks flying in all the right directions.
