Ethan Cohn & Sebastian Greschuk: Ensemble Infinity

The team of bassist Ethan Cohn and Sebastian Greschuk on trumpet, flugelhorn and valve trombone create a rich panoply of musical textures on this fresh and clear release. The melding of the ethereal voice of Tatiana Nova with the remaining horns of Yakiv Tsvietinsky/tp-fh-vtb, Joshua Schofield/as, Giani gagliardi/ts-ss makes for gorgeous and inspiring flowing harmonics, and its all pulsed along by Cohn, Lorenzo Vitolo/p, and Aron Talas/dr-synt with graceful dexterity.

One thinks back to Flora Purim’s days with Return To Forever, except with a horn section, when songs like the soft and rich “Saragossa” or mellow “Luna’s Lullaby” float like cirrus clouds. There’s also a dash of assertiveness with Vitolo digging in on the exciting “Ladina Oswald” with altoist Schofield, with some puffy flugelhorn waft over the sleek “Bosque”. Nova switches from wordless wonder to poetic lyrics on the indie-ish “Bound To You” and the team gets a little bold and prismatic on the askance “Monsanto Daydream”. Rich colors, creative ideas and exciting grooves-when’s the tour?
