Pianist Dave Meder creates ethereal meditations with Philip Dizack/tp, Marty Jaffe/b, Michael Piolet/dr and Isabel Crespo Pardo/voc on this collection of contemplations. The music itself ranges from abstract dots and dashes as on “Hope Is The Thing” to deep and dark ominous hoverings provided by Jaffe’s bowed bass on “Choral”. An inclusion of Robert Kennedy’s famed speech about Martin Luther King’s assassination, teamed with Dizack’s agonizing trumpet, is particularly haunting, while the bookends of “Modern Gothic” and “Abide With Me” put an optimistic and eternal perspective on the heart.
