SHADES OF BRAZIL…Gafieira Rio Miami: Bring Back Samba, Putumayo Presents Bossa Nova, Gabriel Espinosa: Bossas and Boleros, Ted Falcon: To Chegando-Almost There

The colors of Brazil are reflected on these recent releases…

Glitzy sounds of Brazil are put together in this big band bash featuring bold vocals by Jair Oliveira, Isa Duarte, Liz Rosa, Alfredo Del Penho, Vanessa Moreno and Moyseis Marques backed by a bold brass section and extroverted reeds. Anat Cohen brings her clarinet for the warm and breezy “Baile No Elite” and Chico Phiherio’s guitar rides the percussion of “Eu Hein Rosa”. Del Penho saunters to “Piston De Gafieira” and the sounds get tropical for “A VIzinha Do Lado”, with some gitzy sounds abounding on “Dunas” and “No Na Madeira”. Party nights.

Traditional and folksy bossa is well represented on thisten song sampler of lithe sambas. Ana Caram teams with a Getzy sounding tenor on “Blue Bossa” with some floating flute cozying up to Mauricio Pessoa on a Gilbertoish “Mauriciao  Pessoa”. Dori Caymmi teams with Clara Bellar for a gentle “Canto Das Tres Racas” and Bia is gloriously nasal around the pizzicato’d strings of “Ondas:. Peri sounds like she’s strolling along the sandy beach for “Meu Moundo e Hoje” and an 18 piece Orquestra Bamba Social” celebrates during “Comeca Com S”. Tall, tan, young and lovely.

Gabriel Espinosa plays bass and sings with a group of all stars though a collection of modern Brazilian with a core team of  Misha Tsiganov/p, Mauriciao Zottarelli/dr, Jim Seeley/tp, Jay Ashby/tb and a collection of guests. Anat Cohen loans her rich clarinet to the traditional dance of “Mi Jarana” while Chopinesque pianist Fred Hersch supports  Espinoza’s vocals on the beautiful “Aqui Es toy Yo” and “No M e Platiques Mas”. The New York Voices team up withflutist Itai Kriss for a velvety “Sing” with the leader showing his bass work on the gentle “Amelia”. Contemporary classics.

Violins and mandolin, Ted falcon mixes musicians from Los Angeles andSao Paulo for a festive collection of originals. The Brazilian team of Ze Barbeeiro/g-tstg, Fabricio Rosil/cav,and Leo Rodrigues/perc, String Quarrtet and Angelenos Wesley Amorim/g, Colin Walker/g, John Leftwich/b, Clarice Cast/perc and Ben Rempel/prec are joine by Anat Cohen on the warm “Into the Chorsphere”, with some lsty flute b Fay Roberts on “Salsa Samba” and Rumi Indue for “Cando de Cara”. Tropical tones are sensuous on “Eaton Canyon” and the sstrings are festive for “Qebra Galho”. Cheerful tones.
