Recorded at the Newport Jazz Festival back in 1966, Nina Simone is captured in a transition time of her career, mixing her earlier jazz days with more modern social consciousness. She’s backed by Rudy Stevenson/, Lisle Atkinson/b and Bobby Hamilton/dr, and while her albums of that year were focused on pop tunes and strings, her live shows included a gritty “Blues For Mama” and earthy “Be My Husband”. She’s penetrating on the “Mississippi Go—am” and hits like an ice pick during “I Loves You Porgy”. Her piano playing is exquisite, as on “Blues For Moma” and Music For Lovers”. Where’s this one been hiding?
