PAGING CHUCK BEDNARIK…Kane Kalas: High Hopes

Dedicating this album to his father and the world of Philadelphia, baritone crooner Kane Kalas delivers a hoot of an album that is as tasty and filling as lunch at Pat’s Steak House. He mixes and matches with various vocalists, orchestras, and even choirs, starting with a fun read of “Take Me Out To The Ballgame” while doing some deep duets with John Conahan/p on”I’ve Never Been In Love Before”. He duets with Rache Brennan with ukulele support on  “On The Way to Cape May” and takes on Nathan Detroit for a strong “Luck Be A Lady”.  “French Foreign L egion” includes the swinging take of France’s National Anthem” and the reeds are cute on a read of “High Hopes”.

In case you haven’t  noticed, Kalas likes Sinatra almost as much as dad and The Phillies, but the latter comes out on a fun  “Eagles Victory Song”. Still, the question of strudel versus cheesecake is not answered with some nice trumpet work on the Guys and Dolls’ “Fugue For Tinhorns”. I wanna see this guy perform, maybe in some joint at 11th and Catherine.
