The second summit meeting between vocalist Kurt Elling and guitarist Charlie Hunter is a continuation of the singer’s delve into R&B and urban soul. Along with drummer Corey Fonville and Don Was’ production, Elling and Hunter get funkyh on “Freemman Square”with lots of wah wah guitar on “Bounce It”. Elling hip hops through “Not Her/Not Now” and soulfully struts through Joni Mitchell’s “Black Crow” and Bob Dorough’s “Naughty Number Nine”. Elling sounds excited by the new ideas of this genre, but as with most things up to date, one wonders how it will age over time, as opposed to his earlier timeless records.
