IF ENO PLAYED BASS…John von Seggern: Ambient Bass Guitar

Most of the albums in the ambient genre tend to be from keyboardists, which makes sense since Brian Eno was the essential progenitor of the style. Bassist John von Seggern learned much from his tenure with the Eno-associated trumpeter Jon Hassell, as this solo album attests. With no edits or overdubs, von Seggern creates a musical tapestry with his bass like a painter and a variety of brushes.

Hints of ethereal or liturgical voices are created on pieces such as the hovering “Visions” with almost church like organ creating reflective tones for the dark “Adumbrations”. Echoey string scapes are delicate for “Unfolding” with hovering harps  hinted at on ”Wanderers”. There’s even an Andalusian feel to the strummed “The Gate” while tensile electricity hovers on “Mood”. A heavenly choir of tones creates a mosaic of ideas for “Vision” with   a  fog wafting on “Projections”. Sound of a stained glass window.
