Bill Frisell: Big Sur

Originally debuted as a Commission from the 2012 Monterey Jazz Festival, Bill Frisell’s latest collection of 19 short but sweet songs mixes his Beautiful Dreamers Trio and 858 Quartet by infusing the talents of Eyvind Kang/viola, Hank Roberts/cel, Jenny Scheinman/vio and Rudy Royston dr, creating a mix of semi-surf rock and American folk music. Of the former, “The Big One” and “A Good Spot” give homage to the bands like the Deltones, folksy material such as “The Music of Glen Deven Ranch,” “Gather Good Things” and in particular “Cry Alone” could feel comfortable in the local VFW in Chatanooga. Delicate pizzicato moments are on the delightful “Walking Stick” whle full violin yearnings are Harvested on “We All Love Neil Young.” Frisell keeps the guitar playing plaintive and calm letting space and silence do a lot of the talking, just like a walk along Highway 1.
