Nelson Blanchard: Nelson Blanchard

Blue-eyed soul is served up by vocalist Nelson Blanchard, who mixes his own compositions with some standards and Nashville-based Dan Tyler. There’s a core team of David Hyde/b, Eddie Bayers/dr and David Grissom-Brent Mason/g with a sometimes horn section of Jason Parfait/sax and Ian Smith/brass as well as a rotation collection of guests. Blanchard works well on gospel tinged pieces like “(I’m Not Just” Anybody’s Fool” and the mix of organ and Strat on “Far Cry”. A Cajun inflected “My Heart’s In Louisiana”  brings in some accordion and vocal guest Dan Scneider”, with strings on “Teach Me Tonight” a tasty invitation. There’s even a dash of horns with a C&W feel to “I’m Leaving It Up To You with Tareva Henderson joining at the mic, and Blanchard shows he has boogie in his bones on a cruising “Big I-10” that even includes some engine revving. Working class dues are paid.
