If you like your jazz high on the funk factor, check out this single by guitarist Ari Joshua. He leads a band of tenor saxist Skerik, Hammond man Delvon Lamarr and drummer Grant Schroff on this tune that sounds like vintage soul jazz from Blue Note, circa Ronnie Laws or Ronnie Foster from the funkied 1970s. Joshua wacka wookas the hip intro with a crisp groove laid down by Schroff allowing for some relaxed soul to blow out from Skerik’s reed. Lammar keeps the modal mood humming on his solo, with the leader himself bringing out lyricism reminiscent of Larry Carlton when out in the spotlight. The mix of supple neck backbeat and sleek solos makes for a nice invite to The Baked Potato. When are they heading out here?
