Puerto Rican tenor saxist Roy McGrath mixes sizzling rhythms with modern jazz on this collection of the leaders tunes and charts. He gives a lot of space for the torrid solos of trumpeter Constantine Alexander, with the rhythm team of Eduardo Zayas/p, Efrain Martinez/dr, Kitt Lyles/b, Victor Junit Gonazles/cong, Javier Quintana-Ocasio/bong and Jose Carrasquillo/cuatro sizzle underneath.
Carrasquillo’s cuatro gives a rich folk feel on the s lick “Guamani” while the leader is bold over the percolating percussion on “Cuembe Na Ma”. Alexander leads the charge on the hectic “Loquito or Ti” and Linda Morena” while Zayas is graceful as he saunters on “Antonia” and teams with Lyles on the graceful “ Bolerito”. Pops like fried rice.
